If you live anywhere in Punjab, you already know the winter drill. This year SNGPL is supplying domestic gas in just three windows a day — roughly **5:30am–8:30am, 11:30am–1:30pm, and 5:30pm–8:30pm** — about eight hours in total, and even during those windows the pressure is often too weak to fire a geyser properly. That 5:30am slot, exactly when you want a hot shower, is when pressure is at its worst.

The result is predictable: families fall back on electric geysers or portable heaters, and the December-to-February electricity bill goes through the roof. There is a better answer, and it has quietly become far more attractive in 2026 — heating your water (and even your rooms) with solar instead of gas.

Why gas is failing you this winter

SNGPL has been clear that gas demand "increases many times over" in winter, so it rations domestic supply while keeping industry running. For a household that means:

  • No dependable hot water in the early morning or late night
  • Low-pressure gas that struggles to heat a storage tank
  • Growing reliance on an electric geyser at the worst possible tariff

And electric backup is brutal. A family of five needs roughly **6–7 kWh of heat per day** for bathing and dishes in winter. A resistive electric geyser turns that into about **200 units a month**. If those units push your total consumption over 200, your *entire* bill is recalculated at unprotected rates — up to **Rs 47.69 per unit** plus a fuel adjustment of Rs 2.5–3.5. That is easily **Rs 8,000–9,500 a month just for hot water**, and around Rs 27,000 across the three coldest months.

The three solar routes to hot water

There are three practical ways to move off gas, and they suit different budgets.

**1. Solar thermal (evacuated-tube) water heater.** These glass tubes heat water directly from the sun with zero electricity. A 200-litre unit for a 5–6 person home costs roughly **Rs 130,000–150,000 installed**; a 150-litre unit is Rs 100,000–120,000. Evacuated tubes are the right choice for Punjab because they still perform in cold, hazy weather where flat-plate collectors fade. Efficiency runs 70–85% in the sunny months and 50–70% in winter, so every unit includes a small electric backup element for cloudy mornings.

**2. PV solar geyser (a normal geyser run off your panels).** This uses a solar-compatible electric geyser with a low-wattage 1,200–1,500W element, powered by your rooftop inverter during daylight. Basic solar-compatible geysers start around **Rs 21,000–40,000**. You heat a well-insulated tank at midday and draw hot water in the evening and next morning.

**3. Heat pump water heater.** An air-source heat pump moves heat rather than generating it, delivering a coefficient of performance (COP) of about 2.5–3 even in Punjab winters. That means it makes the same 6–7 kWh of heat using only **2–2.5 units of electricity** instead of 6–7. Heat-pump water heaters are still a premium, emerging product here — budget roughly **Rs 180,000–350,000** for a 200–300 litre unit — so get written quotes before committing.

The 2026 game-changer: self-consumption now beats export

Here is the piece most people miss. Since NEPRA replaced net metering with **net billing on 9 February 2026**, surplus solar you export is bought back at only about **Rs 11 per unit** (the National Average Energy Purchase Price), down from roughly Rs 27 before. Every unit you consume yourself, however, saves you the full retail tariff — Rs 45+ on higher slabs.

Under net billing, a unit of solar you pour into your water tank at noon is worth roughly four times a unit you sell to the grid. Heating water and rooms during sunlight hours is now the smartest thing you can do with rooftop solar.

Existing net-metered consumers who signed **before 9 February 2026 are grandfathered** at their old 1:1 rates until their agreement expires, so this shift hits new solar owners hardest — and makes daytime "solar-to-heat" loads the obvious win for everyone. Sizing and cost for a typical Punjab home

For a 5-person household in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala or Multan:

  • **Already have solar?** Add a 1,500W solar-compatible storage geyser (150–200L) and run it off your inverter at midday: **Rs 25,000–40,000**. This converts near-worthless export into avoided consumption.
  • **No solar, want the simplest fix?** A 200L evacuated-tube solar water heater: **Rs 130,000–150,000**, near-zero running cost year-round.
  • **Want maximum efficiency and future heating?** A heat-pump water heater plus a small **1.5–2 kW** dedicated PV array (panels at Rs 38–43/watt): heater Rs 180,000+ and PV around Rs 90,000–130,000.

The payback maths

Compare the running cost of that same 6–7 kWh/day of winter hot water:

  • **Resistive electric geyser (grid):** ~200 units/month → **Rs 8,000–9,500/month**
  • **Heat pump (grid, COP 2.5):** ~72 units/month → **Rs 3,300–3,500/month**
  • **Solar thermal or PV geyser on solar:** effectively **Rs 0** during daylight

The economics are compelling:

  • **Solar-compatible geyser on existing panels (~Rs 30,000):** saves Rs 6,000–9,000 a month in winter and keeps saving year-round — **payback in under one winter.**
  • **200L solar water heater (~Rs 140,000):** saves Rs 60,000–80,000 a year versus electric backup — **payback in roughly 2 years.** Industry installers commonly quote 3–4 years even on conservative usage.
  • **Heat-pump system:** higher upfront cost, **payback around 3–4 years**, but it doubles as an option for space heating.

Don't forget the heating

The topic is hot water *and* heating, and the same logic applies to warming rooms. A gas heater is useless outside SNGPL's three windows, and a resistive electric heater is ruinously expensive. An **inverter AC running in heat mode delivers a COP near 3** — three units of warmth per unit of electricity — and, run on your rooftop solar during the day, costs almost nothing. It is by far the cheapest way to take the chill off a Punjab living room this winter.

Practical tips before you buy

  • Insist on **evacuated tubes**, not flat-plate, for winter performance
  • Get a **well-insulated storage tank** so midday solar heat lasts into the evening
  • Confirm the backup element wattage and that it works with your inverter
  • Match tank size to family: ~40L per person is a good rule
  • Take at least two written quotes; installation quality decides real-world results
