Net metering is what turns a solar system into a bill-slashing machine — it lets you export the surplus power your panels make during the day and get credit for it. But the application process confuses a lot of people. Here is exactly how it works in Pakistan and how to apply through your DISCO, step by step.

What is net metering (and net billing)?

Net metering uses a bi-directional meter that records both the power you draw from the grid and the surplus you send back. Pakistan has recently shifted toward a net-billing model with a lower buyback rate, but the application and metering process is essentially the same. If you want the policy detail, read net metering vs net billing in Pakistan. Either way, the goal is our on-grid & net metering setup done right.

Are you eligible?

  • A three-phase connection is the usual requirement (some single-phase loads also qualify).
  • Your solar system size should be within your sanctioned load.
  • Enough shade-free roof or ground space for the panels.
  • A clear, legal electricity connection in the applicant’s name.

Documents you will usually need

  • A copy of your CNIC.
  • A recent electricity bill.
  • The net-metering application form for your DISCO.
  • Equipment details and datasheets for your panels and inverter.
  • A wiring/single-line diagram of the installation (we prepare this for you).

The step-by-step process

  • Install a net-metering-ready solar system with a compatible inverter.
  • Submit the net-metering application and documents to your DISCO.
  • The DISCO reviews the application and carries out a feasibility check/inspection.
  • Sign the net-metering agreement once approved.
  • The DISCO installs a bi-directional (net) meter at your premises.
  • Your system starts exporting surplus units — and your bill starts dropping.

How long does it take?

From application to a working bi-directional meter typically takes a few weeks, depending on the DISCO and how complete your paperwork is. Getting the application right the first time is the best way to avoid delays.

Which DISCO are you on?

Your distribution company depends on your city. We handle net metering with all of them: IESCO in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, LESCO in Lahore, MEPCO in Multan and Taunsa Sharif, and K-Electric in Karachi.

A correctly prepared application is the difference between net metering in a few weeks and months of back-and-forth.
