When you add backup to a solar system, the battery is one of the biggest decisions. The two main options in Pakistan are lithium (LiFePO4) batteries and traditional tubular (lead-acid) batteries. Both work — but they suit different budgets and goals.

Lifespan and cycles

Lithium batteries typically last 6,000 cycles or more — often a decade of daily use. Good tubular batteries usually last a few years before they need replacing. Over the life of your system, a lithium battery often works out cheaper per usable unit even though it costs more to buy.

Usable capacity

You can safely use around 90% of a lithium battery’s rated capacity, but only about half of a tubular battery’s before you damage it. That means a lithium battery delivers far more real backup from the same headline rating.

  • Lithium: long life, fast charging, no maintenance, compact, higher upfront cost.
  • Tubular: lower upfront cost, proven technology, needs ventilation and periodic water top-up, shorter life.

Think in terms of cost per usable unit over ten years, not just the price on the day you buy.

If you want the best long-term value, daily cycling and a maintenance-free setup, lithium is the clear winner and is what we recommend for most homes.
