If your electricity bill looks higher this month, you are not imagining it. NEPRA has approved another tariff increase that is showing up in July 2026 bills across Pakistan. Here is what changed — and why it makes going solar an even easier decision.

What changed

The increase comes through the monthly Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) — a mechanism that passes changes in fuel and generation costs on to consumers. NEPRA approved an increase of around Rs 0.34 per unit for the May 2026 adjustment, applied nationwide (including K-Electric consumers in Karachi) and reflected in July bills. Notably, the power-purchasing agency had asked for a larger increase, but NEPRA approved a smaller one.

Why your bill keeps climbing

No single change is huge, but they stack up. On top of the base tariff you pay fuel cost adjustments, quarterly tariff adjustments, taxes and fixed charges. That is why the effective rate many households pay is already in the Rs 45–70 per unit range — far above the headline slab rate. Each new adjustment pushes it higher.

This is exactly why solar keeps winning

Every tariff hike makes the electricity you generate yourself more valuable. Even under the new net billing rules, where the value comes from self-consumption rather than export, a well-designed system shields you from these constant increases. See our home solar buyer’s guide for how to design one.

  • Right-size your system to your daytime usage so you consume most of what you generate.
  • Add a battery to use your own cheap solar power in the evening instead of costly grid units.
  • Lock in low-cost energy for 25+ years and stop worrying about the next hike.

The math gets better with every increase

A system that pays for itself in around 4 years at today’s rates pays back even faster as tariffs rise — and then delivers effectively free power for two more decades. For current system costs, see our 5kW, 10kW & 15kW price guide, and remember you can spread the cost with solar on installments.

Grid tariffs only move one way — up. Solar is the one part of your electricity cost you can lock in and control.
